This is a Smith & Wesson First Model Schofield. The Schofield’s were chambered in .45 s&w (A.K.A. .45 Schofield). These were manufactured in 1875 with 3000 being produced for the military and 35 for the civilian market. These were designed to be easy to load and operate while on horseback, as such many were issued to cavalry units. These saw extensive use in the Indian Wars as well as civil disturbances. These were used by regular army up until 1887 but volunteer units continued to use Schofield’s in the Spanish American War of 1898. Schofield’s were a favourite among many lawmen and outlaws of the Wild West. Pat Garrett and Jesse James are 2 of the many who were said to carry these at times. This Schofield has a 7 inch barrel, 6 shot fluted cylinder and a round blade front sight. Military marking “U.S.” on the butt, “L” and “P” on the bottom of the barrel and “L” on the frame. This also has a desirable serial number 1000. The initials J.F. are scratched into the left side. This firearm has a very minor amount of pitting and handling dings especially considering the amount of years these firearms saw military service. This firearm still functions as it should. Timing is perfect. With so few being made, they do not come around very often. This would be the highlight of any serious collection.
